These three things can happen when you take a break from your business

During the last week or so, I have definitely not felt 100% or my “usual” self. This has likely been caused by the dreaded virus that has been our lives for nearly 2 years now that finally caught me— but that is to be expected! We get ill sometimes and cannot expect ourselves to continue at super speed activity and productivity.

The timing of this illness was not great however, as I was in the middle of finishing and launching my new podcasting course! Somehow I ploughed along through it, but this week as my symptoms reduced, I actually started to feel quite exhausted. Such a wave or tiredness was tough to accept as I am always striving to be “productive” and “busy” — I can feel so guilty about taking breaks and resting.

As my energy levels drained though, I was left with no choice but to take a physical and mental break from my business. I decided to have an afternoon nap in search of some rejuvenation and an energy boost. This turned out to be an amazing decision!

So, I have written this article in hope that I can reach out to anyone who also feels guilty for taking breaks — to remind you that it is OK, and it is safe to do so. Here are three things that can happen when you take a break from your business.

1. You receive a sign from… something bigger than you

One day last week I was so engrossed in my course launch that I experienced a bad case of entrepreneurial overwhelm. So I decided to “surrender” to the Universe, something that the amazing Carrie Green from the Female Entrepreneur Association has talked about before. Basically, this meant that I took a step back that day and took the evening off, ran myself a bath and read a fictional book. No more business today, thank you very much!

And something amazing happened as a result. The next morning when I woke up, a notification was waiting on my phone from Etsy, which was quite odd as I have a “shop” with about 5 items and not really made any income from it. The notification read that I had made a sale, which confused me even more because the item that had been purchased was from my other travel blog business — a 6 page PDF download that was my oldest listing. This had been sitting there for nearly 2 years!

I refuse to believe that this was a mere coincidence. Rather, I believe it was a sign from above (or around) to encourage me to persevere in my business journey. It was a sign that this online business malarkey is actually worth sticking with. All my continued efforts and energy that I had been putting out into the world was resulting in something— even after 2 whole years in this case.

2. You can have a different perspective on something

You know those e-mail newsletters you sign up to but never have the time to open? Remember that pile of business / mindset books that are sitting in your bedside table, waiting for you to turn the pages? Oh- and what about all those podcast episodes you downloaded but are weeks’ old now?

When you are working “in” your business, and by “in” I mean you have tunnel vision that is so focused on one perspective or approach that you cannot see the wood for the trees. You aren’t in an open minded state to realise that other approaches and methods are staring you in the face — or sitting on your bedside table or in your inbox.

Taking a break from your usual 100mph pace can help you to detach from your current ways that maybe aren’t working but you haven’t realised yet, or help you get inspired to take a different approach. Sometimes it can just take stopping for a day to have such a realisation, which is super healthy for you and your business.

3. You are conserving physical and mental energy to return even better

OK, so it may be a little obvious but taking a break from your business results in that conservation of your precious energy that can be used in an even better way when you return to working.

What do I mean? Well, continuing to work when you’re feeling super stressed, anxious, ill, tired etc. can drain your energy even more than usual, so it is actually a much better idea to step away. This allows you to stop your energy fizzling away at a fast pace, then on your return you can target and channel your energy much more effectively, having rested.
